When Janet Barmore was 15 years old, she got her first job — at a bowling alley in Bountiful. She was drawn to the coffee shop there and loved seeing the regulars come in to dine and socialize.
"I liked the atmosphere of the little mom and pop cafe diner," Janet said.
Her dream to open her own cafe someday remained on the back burner. In May 2005, she saw her hopes materialize when she opened Janet's Sunshine Cafe. The tiny dining room seats just 37, but Janet keeps it packed while she is open for breakfast and lunch.
As for the menu, Janet said her mom was a great cook who taught her to make things from scratch. The menu came to Janet naturally, as she selected her favorite recipes — meals she had been perfecting since childhood.
The breakfast items are all a hit, including the French Toast, made with thick slices of sourdough bread; Biscuits and Gravy; and the Spanish Omelet, with three eggs, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, cheese, ranchero sauce and sour cream.
Her signature dish is Granola Pancakes , made with homestyle cinnamon granola in the batter, served with real butter and warm maple syrup. "They are very filling," she said.
The hash browns are made fresh from real potatoes each day. Health-conscious diners enjoy the Garden Classic, a dish made by topping the hash browns with fresh carrots, zucchini, mushrooms, green peppers, broccoli, onions, tomatoes and cheese, with two eggs on the side.
For lunch, Janet said her hamburgers are popular, prepared with 1/2-pound-hand-pressed patties. The Garlic Burger is made with fresh garlic in the meat, and cheddar or Swiss cheese.
She also serves chili and a daily soup. Selections include Hungarian mushroom, split pea, jalapeno corn chowder and clam chowder, just to name a few.
Janet cooks tri-tip on an outdoor charcoal grill for a Friday lunch special, which includes choice of soup or salad, fries or rice, and a drink.
Now that her dream has become her reality, Janet said that it perfectly matches the vision she had as a teenager in the bowling alley cafe.
